I'm just gonna go with book series to make this easier.
1: The Faithful and the Fallen (John Gwynne)
ITS AMAZING OKAY JUST READ THE FIRST ONE (Malice) AND YOU'LL UNDERSTAND
2: Magnus Chase series (Rick Riordan)
It's better than Percy Jackson, in case you're wondering. Probably his best series to date.
3: DragonLance chronicles (Various Authors)
Ok. So if you're into fantasy, this is where you go. This series is a monstrosity of a series written by multiple authors with so many different story arcs you'll never read them all. I love it so much I've bought 20 of the books from 7 different sub-series and I'm still going.
4: The Night's Dawn trilogy (Peter F. Hamilton) [NSFW]
This guy is the UK's single best sci-fi writer. I'm currently reading The Reality Dysfunction and i'm only 800 pages in. If you like science fiction and want a book which will take you several months to read, this thing is amazing. It combines realistic science fiction with a little fantasy and supernatural, taking you from what you thought was a normal space opera in the first few hundred pages to a horror story... set in space! The universe in this series is MASSIVE with several large galactic powers and systems with their own intermingled stories.
5: Star Wars old expanded universe (pre-disney)
So, there's a lot of Star Wars books out there but i'll mention a few amazing ones. DO NOT judge the book by the cover. Being a Star Wars book doesn't mean it's a money grab or a tacky star wars add-on. These books are just the same as other books... but with lightsabers. I'll recommend the Old Republic series and the Lost Tribe of the Sith mini-series.
Also, i'd like to point out that I HAVE read the obvious choices like Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, etc. but I think that the ones I've mentioned above are more enjoyable than all of these.
More of Pengu's book recommendations:
The Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan) [14 books, ~800 pages each]
The Dwarves (Markus Heitz) [4 books, ~800 pages each]
The Moontide Quartet (David Hair) [NSFW] [4 books, ~700 pages each]
Red Mars Trilogy (Kim Stanley Robinson) [3 books, ~700 pages each]
Everything by Rick Riordan
Everything by Douglas Adams
Okay, I went super overboard but oh well.
