You can always sell iron ore or gold ore for money, and Yes the ingot form might be more worthless. It does not stop ppl from buying bulks if they don't wanna afk for days on end.

Even without free public farms, iron and gold becomes worthless before too long. People LOVE building those farms. Even if you charge for access, the supply soon overruns the demand.
